Lep|tin [griech. leptós = klein, dünn, mager; -in (3)], das; -s, -e: von den Fettzellen des Organismus gebildetes Protein aus 146 Aminosäuren, das als Botenstoff im Hypothalamus fungiert; sein Fehlen löst Hungergefühle aus.

Leptin
 
[griechisch »schlank«], ein 1994 entdecktes, vom Fettgewebe gebildetes Proteohormon. 1995 wurden die patentierten Rechte am Leptin-Gen für 70 Mio. $ von einer amerikanischen Biotechnologiefirma erworben, dem höchsten bisher erzielten Betrag für ein Genpatent. Dem Leptin wird eine große Potenz zur Behandlung von Fettsucht eingeräumt, da eine Störung der Leptinwirkung als eine Ursache für die Ausbildung der Fettsucht angesehen wird.
